A new look Student Slingshot team hosted the second of three Slingshot Academies in three months.
Since Academy 1.0 the Student Slingshot team has swollen in number as an increasing demand for the unique brand of Slingshot guidance has led to growing activities in areas such as production and events management.

Once more Transition Year students travelled far and wide to tread the boards of Filmbase Dublin and the three flights of stairs were no match for the energetic students whose passion to learn was evident. The career guidance day with a difference proved popular yet again as the mentors and industry leaders spoke to a full house.

For those of you unfamiliar with Student Slingshot and the Slingshot academy, it’s really quite simple. A group of students have come together from UCD, DCU,  DIT and NUIG with the goal of helping as many of Ireland’s students as possible in finding the career path of best fit.

This process took the shape of a networking night in November, and more recently the Slingshot Academy.

Unlike the typical Irish career guidance model, it was final year college students who were on hand to inform, instruct and inspire the gathered TYs on their chosen disciplines.

The candid look into third level education holds so much value than a study of the popularity contest which is the points systems.  A fact which will surely stand to the attendees in years to come once they begin to consider the dreaded CAO.

The morning kicked off with small group discussions on science, language studies and business studies. This closer setting presented the ideal opportunity to question, and learn from the mentors in an intimate environment.

Similar classes were then held in nursing, journalism and social entrepreneurship which proved absolutely riveting. A message which spanned all six of the chosen disciplines was that college is a time to do what appeals to you and not simply a case of choosing what others may want for you.

Once suitably enlightened by the third level students, the TYs heard from those who had reached the next step in the career path.

On hand to discuss the paths which they had taken following the leaving cert were Domhnall Hernon of Bell Labs, Dr. Alan Sheridan, Storyful journalist Donie O’Sullivan, and Cormac Chisholm of the academy sponsors SAP. The career areas stretched from research engineering to journalism and thus catered for the diverse audience.

LinkedIn’s highly successful Lindsay Browning shared her wealth of experience in the form of her closing speech and compelled the young students once more to avoid the status quo and to follow their dreams, Lindsay is the perfect advocate of this message as she avoided third level education and relied upon hard work and dedication.

The third and final Slingshot Academy of the year will take place in only two weeks-time. Tickets are selling fast however so if you’re in TY and are seeking a bit of inspiration from the world be sure to sign up at studentslingshot.com .
